BUMP programs address the need to give children access to the cultural wealth of African American musical communities and to enhance their ability to tap into that wealth. Research shows that ignoring and suppressing children’s cultural backgrounds disempowers them educationally. Ignorance and suppression of non-European musical traditions robs all children of valuable cultural tools. It especially strips African American and Latinx youth of confidence, identity and belonging. This problem is reflected in the low enrollment of children of color in middle and high school music programs. Though Black music is a core part of American culture, and though its excellence, innovation and influence are unquestioned, youth have severely limited opportunities at best for gaining its educational benefits. BUMP provides a rich experience of musical learning, performing and community, grounded in African-centered cultural values.
