BUMP-Out

BUMP-Out provides classes, workshops and residencies for preK-5th graders at program sites across the Triangle and in collaboration with partners.

Our caring, experienced, talented teaching artists lead students in a rich experience of musical self-expression, creativity and learning. In BUMP-Out programs, students learn through listening, singing, instruments, movement, rhythm, games and hands-on activities. Our programs support musicianship and 21st century skills, and reinforce the Standard Course of Study for the arts, language arts, social studies, math and science.

Example 2017-2018 Workshop Topics
K-8 “What is Music of the African Diaspora?” is an interactive workshop teaching the concept of the African Diaspora and its music traditions. Students will learn how the continent of Africa is the source of global music traditions resulting from the movement of its people and music to other continents.

In the K-8 “Talking Drums” workshop, students learn about the history of the instrument and see and hear talking drums in action. They learn the fascinating history of talking drums and gain an understanding of how they work. They learn to play simple speech/rhythm patterns.

Pre-BUMP serves pre-school children, infants through 5-year-olds. Pre-BUMP emphasizes songs and movement, improvisation, social games and instruments. Topics include African Folksongs and Songs of the Caribbean.

What is African Diasporic Music?

“Diaspora” means a wide dispersion from an ancestral homeland (“dia” = across; “spora” = seed). The “seeds” of African expressive practices have spread throughout the world and from their roots have grown Spirituals, jazz, blues, steel pan, reggae, hip-hop, art music, operas… The list goes on!
